Mastering Wedding Stress: A Guide to Calm Planning

Navigating Wedding Stress with Holistic Wellness & Mindfulness: A Personal Journey

The past weekend marked a monumental chapter in my life: my wedding! It was an experience that truly defied description – amazing, perfect, and utterly beautiful. Yet, like many significant life events, it also brought with it an undeniable wave of stress. The meticulous planning, the endless details, the pre-treatment routines… oh, the sheer volume of details! While I’m still in the process of decompressing from the whirlwind, I promise a full recap and more stunning photos will be shared very soon. But before diving into the celebratory specifics, I wanted to address a more fundamental aspect of this journey: managing stress and maintaining my well-being amidst the chaos.

It’s a truth I often preach, and one that became incredibly apparent during my wedding preparations: health and wellness encompass far more than simply eating healthy. While nutrition undoubtedly forms the bedrock of our physical well-being, it’s merely one pillar. Our overall emotional and mental health plays an equally critical role in sustaining a state of wellness. And clearly, stress stands as a formidable threat to this delicate emotional balance. Life, by its very nature, is punctuated by stressful moments. How we choose to navigate and respond to these challenges profoundly impacts our holistic health, influencing everything from our sleep and digestion to our mood and energy levels.

The Unseen Burdens of Wedding Planning & a Demanding Life

Many people were quite surprised, even slightly incredulous, when I revealed that I didn’t hire a wedding planner. And honestly, I understand why. My daily life leading up to the wedding was already incredibly packed. Juggling a full-time job, consulting on the side, dedicating time to writing this blog, and diligently home-cooking every single meal for both Daniel and myself – all while adhering to a strict rotation AIP/Paleo diet – was a monumental undertaking. Add to that the commitment of going back to school to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and it’s safe to say “busy” was an understatement. Yet, despite this demanding schedule, I was immensely blessed with incredibly supportive parents on both sides who provided invaluable assistance with the planning. My in-laws, in particular, are creative geniuses, and their touch will undoubtedly shine through when I share the wedding photos soon. Even with such fantastic support, the cumulative stress was significant, posing a genuine potential threat to my health and hard-earned progress.

It’s important to clarify that, while my personal dietary needs were paramount, the wedding feast itself wasn’t entirely paleo. Attempting to orchestrate a fully paleo menu for an entire guest list alongside everything else would have been an overwhelming additional burden. However, my personal plate, and those of a few celiac guests, were meticulously planned to be paleo, gluten-free, and grain-free. This even included the delightful challenge of baking a small, grain-free wedding cake on top of my already overflowing to-do list. Looking back, it truly felt like a lot to manage.

Yet, here I am, sitting on the other side of it all. Still pretty exhausted, yes, but alive, well, and ready to share how I navigated those high-stress waters. It’s a testament to the power of intentional self-care and strategic planning, even when life feels overwhelmingly busy.

Proven Strategies for Managing Stress During Life’s Big Moments

During the intense period of wedding planning, I consciously implemented several strategies to safeguard my emotional and physical health. These weren’t grand gestures, but rather consistent, mindful practices that created pockets of calm and efficiency in my otherwise hectic schedule. Here’s a closer look at what helped me:

1. Embracing Mindfulness: A Daily Anchor

In the whirlwind of wedding preparations, the simplest yet most profound tool I wielded was mindfulness. It’s more than just a buzzword; it’s the practice of truly taking a moment to breathe, to assess your current emotional and physical state, and to think through situations with intention rather than reaction. This intentional pause makes an enormous difference. Amidst the endless to-do lists and the craziness that threatened to consume me, the only consistent way I found to de-stress was by waking up early. This sacred morning time allowed me to meditate, pray, and mindfully plan what I needed to accomplish for the day. By setting intentions and connecting with myself before the day’s demands began, I created a mental anchor that helped me stay grounded. Even short bursts of deep breathing, focusing on the sensations of the breath, or simply acknowledging my feelings without judgment, became powerful mini-breaks that restored a sense of calm and clarity.

2. Mastering Meal Prep with the Power of the Freezer

Let’s be honest, during a period as intense as wedding planning, meal prep was often the absolute last thing I wanted to do. However, adhering to a strict rotation diet as part of my AIP/Paleo protocol made it an absolute necessity for maintaining my health. While I genuinely enjoy meal prepping and find it incredibly satisfying – it helps me feel accomplished and significantly clears up my week when done in advance – I simply did not have the time or the consistent stamina every single week. This is where the freezer became my ultimate ally and an indispensable tool for healthy eating under pressure.

My strategy involved buying ingredients in bulk and preparing them for future use. For example, I would purchase five pounds of fresh Brussels sprouts at a time. I’d then chop them all up, cook a quarter of them for immediate consumption, and freeze the remaining raw portions. This way, when I needed a quick, healthy side later in the week, I could simply dump a frozen portion onto a baking sheet, drizzle with some bacon fat (for flavor and healthy fats), and roast them. They cooked beautifully from frozen, saving me immense prep time on busy weeknights.

The same principle applied to proteins. I’d buy a whole chicken, bake it on a Saturday night, enjoy some throughout the week, and then shred and freeze the rest in convenient portions. This meant always having cooked protein ready to be added to salads, stews, or quick stir-fries. Beyond whole foods, I also dedicated time to making large batches of nutrient-dense bone broth, freezing it in smaller containers or ice cube trays. This ensured I always had this healing staple on hand for quick soups or to sip directly. It was also incredibly helpful to portion out entire meals and freeze them, ready to go. The night before, I would simply pull a meal out of the freezer, let it thaw, and have a healthy, compliant meal waiting for me the next day with minimal effort.

3. Adapting Exercise: The Gentle Power of Yoga

Any active individual will tell you that exercise is a powerful mood booster, a source of energy, and a fantastic way to feel refreshed. My usual routine includes CrossFit, which is incredibly intense and demanding. However, during the most stressful phases of wedding planning, I simply wasn’t feeling that intensity. My body was sending clear signals that it needed something different, something gentler. Listening to that intuition, I sought out an alternative: yoga. I found a Groupon for a local yoga studio nearby, and it genuinely became a life-saver!

Yoga allowed me to elevate my heart rate, engage my muscles, and enjoy a satisfying workout without further draining my already stretched energy reserves. It offered a crucial balance of physical movement and mental calm, helping to alleviate tension and improve flexibility. This isn’t to say I’m done with CrossFit; it remains an important part of my fitness journey. But during that particular period, yoga was precisely what my body and mind craved. The studio I started attending, Balancing Energy, was nothing short of great. The instructors were supportive, and the atmosphere was incredibly peaceful. I’m now looking forward to incorporating much more yoga into my routine once I return from my honeymoon, making it a consistent component of my long-term wellness strategy.

4. The Therapeutic Embrace of Warm Baths

Sometimes, the simplest forms of self-care are the most effective. And who doesn’t love the unparalleled relaxation of a warm bath? During my wedding planning, a soothing bath became a non-negotiable part of my evening routine. It offered a precious sanctuary, a temporary escape from the never-ending stream of decisions and tasks. The warm water worked wonders in relaxing tense muscles, and the quiet solitude provided an opportunity for my mind to unwind. Adding Epsom salts, known for their magnesium content, further enhanced the muscle relaxation and helped to promote a deeper sense of calm. Often, a few drops of calming essential oils like lavender would transform the experience into a truly sensory and therapeutic ritual. This simple act of immersing myself in warmth became a powerful tool for de-stressing and preparing my body and mind for restorative sleep.

5. Deepening Spiritual Connection: The Power of Prayer

I am profoundly #blessed to work at a ministry where we dedicate 30 minutes to prayer each day. This structured time for spiritual reflection became an even more vital resource during the intensity of wedding planning. Beyond this dedicated workplace prayer, I intentionally sought out additional moments throughout my day to spend in prayer and connection with God. This practice was incredibly calming and served as a powerful reminder to put everything into perspective. In moments of overwhelm, prayer offered a sense of peace, guidance, and reassurance. It helped me surrender anxieties that were beyond my control, fostering a deeper trust and reducing the mental burden. This spiritual grounding was instrumental in maintaining my emotional equilibrium and preventing the stress from consuming me entirely.

Post-Wedding Reflections & The Journey Ahead

Now that the wedding is beautifully behind us, there’s a bittersweet feeling lingering. I absolutely cherished every moment of being a bride and the joy of seeing all our beloved family and friends gathered. But as one chapter closes, an exciting new one begins: the honeymoon! We’re embarking on our adventure this Friday and won’t be back until November, so things might be a little quiet on the blog front for a while. However, I am beyond excited to share all the details and incredible experiences when I return.

Our destination is the breathtaking city of Florence, Italy, promising an abundance of fun pictures, delicious (and probably not entirely paleo, but worth it!) food, and unforgettable memories to come. This journey into marital bliss, underpinned by a commitment to holistic wellness, has truly been a lesson in resilience and self-care.
