Our long-held dream was to one day embark on a full home remodel or design a house from the ground up. However, fate often led us to homes that had been “flipped” with generic finishes, completely lacking the character and soul we craved.

The turning point arrived in the spring of 2022. An intriguing real estate email landed in my husband’s inbox – a listing for a house with no photo. Curiosity piqued, he delved a little deeper and uncovered a true hidden gem: a custom-built home from 1975, right in our desired neighborhood. Upon seeing it in person, we quickly realized the extensive work it would require. It was a substantial undertaking, but we felt an undeniable connection to its potential and were ready to embrace the challenge.

As a professional food blogger, the kitchen naturally became the epicenter of our renovation efforts. This is where I spend countless hours creating content, experimenting with recipes, and capturing mouth-watering photography. We poured all our energy and creative vision into transforming this crucial space. The result is a kitchen that not only resonates deeply with our personal style but also functions as an impeccably designed and highly efficient workspace, perfectly tailored to my professional needs.

The Kitchen Before: A Glimpse into its Past

Stepping back in time to July 2022, the “before” state of our kitchen told a very different story. It was a space grappling with the limitations of its era, characterized by features that actively hindered both aesthetics and functionality. The most striking element was the drop ceiling, which significantly compressed the room, making it feel notably smaller and more confined than it actually was. This contributed to a somewhat claustrophobic atmosphere, a stark contrast to the open, airy feel we envisioned.

The original cabinetry, dark and dated, further added to the oppressive feel. These cabinets, typical of their time, offered limited storage solutions and lacked the modern conveniences essential for a bustling kitchen. Compounding the outdated look was a burnt peel-and-stick backsplash – a testament to a quick fix that had long since lost its appeal and was showing significant wear and tear. The overall impression was one of neglect and missed potential, a canvas desperately awaiting a transformative touch.

The Stunning Transformation: A Mid-Century Modern Dream Comes to Life

The “after” is nothing short of a complete metamorphosis. We embarked on a radical renovation, aiming to redefine every aspect of the space. The most impactful change was undoubtedly opening up the ceiling, which instantly liberated the kitchen from its cramped confines. This singular decision dramatically enhanced the sense of openness and airiness, allowing light to flow more freely and creating an expansive feel that was previously unimaginable. Every surface and fixture, from top to bottom, was meticulously replaced: new walls, custom-painted cabinetry, state-of-the-art appliances, and expansive windows. Our overarching goal was to craft a truly unique and inspiring environment—a place where creativity could flourish, both for daily living and for producing engaging content for our audience.

The decision to embrace a bold pink hue for our kitchen cabinets was a deliberate and joyful one, central to achieving our desired mid-century modern aesthetic with a playful twist. This vibrant color choice, combined with carefully selected details, transforms the kitchen from a mere functional area into a statement piece. It’s a design philosophy that champions individuality and rejects bland uniformity. The result is a space that feels utterly bespoke, welcoming, and endlessly inspiring.

The Clever Pantry Transformation: From Laundry Room to Culinary Haven

One of the most inspired decisions during our renovation involved the transformation of what was once the laundry room into our spacious and highly functional pantry. In many older homes like ours, it was common to find the laundry facilities situated either directly within or immediately adjacent to the kitchen, creating a less than ideal setup. To optimize the flow and utility of our home, we relocated the washer and dryer hookups to a more suitable spot in the bathroom, freeing up this valuable real estate for a much-needed pantry.

This pantry, I must admit, holds a particularly special place in my heart, primarily because it houses the original hexagon window. This unique architectural feature was, in fact, the very detail that captivated us and ultimately sealed the deal on purchasing the house. Its distinctive shape and retro charm spoke volumes to our appreciation for mid-century design. We loved it so much that we decided to echo its beauty by installing a second hexagon window in our living room, creating a cohesive design element throughout the home.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the pantry boasts a brilliant functional upgrade. We intentionally sacrificed a portion of its storage space to create an open counter area, specifically dedicated to housing larger countertop appliances like the slow cooker and Instant Pot. This design choice was born out of personal frustration; I always found it cumbersome to have these bulky appliances occupying precious kitchen counter space for hours on end. Now, they can discreetly do their work in the pantry, keeping my main kitchen countertops clear and uncluttered. This solution has been a huge win for both kitchen aesthetics and cooking efficiency!

Optimizing for Success: Food Blogger Upgrades

Our kitchen’s initial layout was a conventional galley kitchen, complete with a small breakfast nook. While functional, it didn’t align with the expansive and versatile workspace I required for my food blogging career. To address this, we strategically added a large kitchen island and extra storage where the breakfast nook once stood, effectively elongating the kitchen and enhancing its overall footprint. This modification transformed the kitchen into a more open and collaborative space, ideal for both cooking and content creation.

The island itself is a marvel of thoughtful design. It incorporates two spacious cabinets and several drawers, meticulously planned to house my most frequently used props and photography equipment. This ingenious storage solution means that everything I need for a photoshoot is right at hand, eliminating the previous inconvenience of having to retrieve items from a completely different room. The immediate accessibility of these tools significantly streamlines my workflow, allowing me to transition seamlessly from cooking to capturing stunning images.

Beyond the structural changes, several appliance choices were also considered essential “food blogger upgrades.” Our double oven, for instance, offers unparalleled flexibility and capacity, allowing me to bake multiple dishes simultaneously or handle larger batches of ingredients with ease. Similarly, our highly efficient dishwasher dramatically reduces cleanup time, a crucial factor when experimenting with numerous recipes. However, arguably the most significant upgrade came in the form of our windows. Natural light is an absolute prerequisite for my preferred style of food photography, which relies on soft, diffused illumination to make dishes truly shine. To maximize this, we replaced two of the original, smaller windows with significantly larger ones, designed to flood the kitchen with an abundance of beautiful, natural light throughout the day. This intentional design choice ensures every culinary creation is captured in its best possible light.

Where is this amazing home located?

We are happily nestled in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area. While it may not be as synonymous with mid-century modern architecture as Palm Springs, the DFW metroplex actually boasts several charming pockets rich with fantastic MCM homes. We truly believe we found one of the best and made the most of what this vibrant area offers!

How long did the entire renovation process take?

The journey began with demolition in the first week of July 2022, and we didn’t officially move into our newly renovated home until January 2023. It’s important to note that this timeline encompasses much more than just the kitchen. Our extensive project included redoing all the flooring throughout the house, undertaking significant mold remediation, and replacing all the walls, among other substantial tasks. It was indeed a colossal job, but we were fortunate enough to remain in our previous home until this renovation was completely finished.

Did you work with a designer or contractor?

We partnered with DFW Landlord Services as our contractor, and they did an excellent job bringing our vision to life. For the design aspect, however, we opted for a completely DIY approach. This meant my husband and I handled all the design decisions ourselves, which, as you can imagine, came with its own unique blend of rewarding successes and challenging moments! 😆

What was the overall cost of the renovation?

To put it mildly, it certainly wasn’t a budget renovation 🤣. However, a significant advantage we had with this house was the relatively easier mortgage and closing costs, primarily because we purchased it “as-is” with no prior work done. We were also incredibly fortunate to have entered the real estate market early, back in 2015, when home values were considerably lower. Our starter home, under 1,000 sq ft at the time, saw a substantial increase in value by the time we sold it. This allowed us to leverage that equity to finance the extensive remodel of our current home. Furthermore, we view this renovation as a dual investment: not only in the future resale value of the house but also directly into my business, as this kitchen functions both as our family hub and my professional workspace.

Were there any DIY elements in the kitchen?

While we undertook several DIY projects in other areas of the house, the primary DIY feature within the kitchen space itself is the unique door to the former laundry room, now our pantry, which connects to a bathroom. My husband designed and crafted this door himself, incorporating charming yellow pegs, and it’s truly a fun and distinctive piece that I absolutely adore!

Any regrets or things you’d do differently?

Despite the immense satisfaction with our kitchen, I do have two notable reflections:

The first was initially a disappointment that turned into a blessing in disguise. We had originally envisioned concrete floors throughout the entire first floor, including the kitchen, aiming for a light grey, industrial aesthetic. However, when the concrete was poured, it cured to a completely unexpected deep brown hue, drastically darkening the entire kitchen. I was quite disheartened by how it clashed with our chosen color palette. Consequently, we made the pivotal decision to lay tile directly over the concrete. This turned out to be the best “happy accident,” as the chosen terrazzo hexagon tile harmonized beautifully with the kitchen’s colors and the original hexagon window, bringing the entire space together far more cohesively than the grey concrete ever would have.

My second regret is one we still need to address! We installed the range hood over the cooktop a couple of inches too low. This detail was easily overlooked during the final stages of the renovation, as the hood was one of the last elements to go in. However, its slightly reduced height becomes very noticeable when I’m cooking, as I frequently feel like I’m about to bump my head. We absolutely plan to raise it eventually, though it will be a somewhat painstaking task, as it will necessitate additional backsplash work.

Our Curated Selections: Appliances, Finishes, and More

Many of you have asked about specific elements in our kitchen, so here’s a breakdown of our choices and where you can find similar items or gather inspiration:

• Light fixtures were vintage. We have a deep appreciation for unique, vintage finds. Our beautiful light fixtures were sourced from various antique shops and online marketplaces, making them one-of-a-kind pieces that add character. I’d link them if I could, but the thrill is in the hunt for similar treasures!
• Countertops. Our countertops are made of durable and elegant quartzite, chosen for its beauty and resilience. While I can’t provide a direct link as we acquired them from a local stone supplier in person, I highly recommend exploring local stone yards in your area for unique options.
• Cabinets. Our stunning pink cabinets were achieved through a clever approach. We actually opted for more affordable, basic white cabinets and then custom-painted them in our desired shade of pink, rather than incurring the higher cost of custom-made pink cabinetry. Unfortunately, the specific base cabinets we used were discontinued shortly after our project completed, but the painting technique is a fantastic DIY option for anyone wanting a custom color!
• Breezeblocks. Originally, a solid wood-paneled wall awkwardly divided the kitchen and dining room. We removed this barrier and instead installed this striking breezeblock wall. It effectively maintains a subtle division between the spaces while simultaneously creating a much more open, airy, and visually interesting flow.
• Floor tile. As mentioned, tile wasn’t our initial plan after the concrete floor mishap. However, this terrazzo hexagon tile became a truly happy accident! It perfectly matches the colors we had already chosen and beautifully complements the original hexagon window in the kitchen. It has quickly become one of my absolute favorite features in the entire kitchen!
• Faucet. This stylish faucet is available in an array of colors, offering versatility for various design schemes. Naturally, for our vibrant kitchen, we couldn’t resist selecting it in a complementary shade of pink.
• Dishwasher. We are absolutely thrilled with this Bosch dishwasher! After years of struggling with less reliable, cheaper models that constantly broke down, we decided to invest in one with stellar reviews. It has proven to be incredibly efficient and quiet, making it an entirely worthwhile upgrade.
• Samsung Bespoke Fridge. This refrigerator is a true statement piece and one of my favorite splurges! Of course, we chose the stunning rose pink finish. It’s a 4-door model with versatile Flex Zone freezer space, and I can’t emphasize enough how incredibly spacious and well-designed it is. If you’re considering this fridge and on the fence, I wholeheartedly recommend it – it’s a game-changer.
• Gas Cooktop. While gas cooktops have been a topic of debate recently, I remain extremely particular about cooking with gas. I’ve experimented with electric and induction cooktops, but for me, nothing quite matches the precise control and immediate heat response that gas provides.
• Microwave.
• Double oven. We specifically chose a double oven that features an air fryer setting, which has proven to be incredibly convenient and versatile for our cooking needs.
• Outlet Covers. Even the smallest details contribute to the overall aesthetic.
• Paper towel holder.
