An Unforgettable Miami Experience: Recapping the Fresh Air Food Blogger Retreat
The recent Fresh Air Retreat in vibrant Miami truly surpassed all my expectations, solidifying its place as the most enjoyable, insightful, and productive food blogger gathering I’ve ever had the privilege to attend. From invaluable networking opportunities to transformative learning sessions, and of course, culinary delights that were utterly out of this world, this retreat was a game-changer. Here’s a comprehensive look back at every inspiring moment and delicious bite!

For nearly a decade, I’ve poured my heart and soul into Unbound Wellness, and I can honestly say that food blogging is the best job in the world. However, the solitary nature of working from home can often lead to feelings of isolation. We all yearn for camaraderie, for genuine connections, and for friendships with others who truly understand the unique challenges and triumphs of this industry. Last fall, watching my fellow food blogger friends attend the Fresh Air Retreat in Austin ignited a serious case of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) within me. I knew instantly that I had to apply, and just six months later, I found myself on a plane to Miami, eagerly anticipating my own retreat adventure!

It offers a unique platform for participants to engage in collaborative learning, drawing insights from both peers and expert hosts. Beyond the educational aspect, attendees have the unparalleled opportunity to forge meaningful connections with innovative brands and immerse themselves in a week that is simultaneously restorative and incredibly energizing. It’s a space where creative sparks fly, professional growth flourishes, and the future of food blogging is collectively shaped.

Day One Recap: Arrival, Welcome, and Sustainable Sips
My journey to Miami began with an anticipation-filled flight from Dallas, eventually landing me at the exquisite retreat house in the late afternoon. Each year, the Fresh Air Retreat selects a new, stunning rental home in a vibrant city, and this Miami residence was absolutely spectacular. Boasting an expansive private pool and breathtaking beach views, it immediately felt less like a typical rental and more like a luxurious, tranquil resort. The sophisticated ambiance and serene surroundings instantly set the tone for a week of relaxation, profound learning, and indulgent culinary discovery.
Our inaugural welcome happy hour was proudly sponsored by Flor De Cana, a renowned producer of sustainable rum with a rich history. What truly set Flor De Cana apart, and piqued my interest significantly, was their unwavering commitment to sustainability, coupled with their product being free of artificial ingredients and added sugars. This dedication to ethical and natural production was recently recognized with the prestigious title of Best Sustainable Rum Distillery by The Ultimate Awards 2023. While I personally abstain from drinking alcohol, I often incorporate it into my cooking to enhance flavors. Therefore, I was incredibly excited to experience the exquisite dishes Chef Trimell prepared using their premium rum, eager to taste the depth and aromatic complexity it could add to our meals, knowing it aligned with values of conscious consumption.
Among the array of appetizers, my absolute favorite was, without a doubt, the succulent pork belly, perfectly glazed with Flor De Cana rum and complemented by a burst of fresh orange zest. The fusion of sweet, savory, and citrus notes was so complex and utterly delicious that I found myself raving about it to my husband, Daniel, over the phone later that evening. For dessert, Chef Trimell presented a classic reimagined: caramelized bananas with a hint of rum, served over creamy, dairy-free ice cream. While I’ve had many versions of this dessert before, Chef Trimell’s rendition was exceptionally nuanced, boasting a perfect balance of sweetness and depth, elevating a familiar treat to gourmet status and leaving a lasting impression.

A recurring and deeply appreciated theme throughout this retreat was the sheer abundance of incredible, thoughtfully prepared food. Even after the delightful happy hour fare, we still enjoyed a full, satisfying dinner that evening. The menu featured perfectly seasoned chicken skewers, a vibrant assortment of grilled vegetables bursting with natural flavors, fluffy quinoa, and delicate white fish. It was a perfectly balanced and deeply satisfying meal, reflecting the chef’s unwavering commitment to both exquisite taste and holistic wellness, ensuring we were nourished and content.

Day Two Recap: Wellness, Wisdom, and Miami’s Culinary Gems
Day two dawned bright and early, kicking off with an invigorating yoga session held right within our luxurious retreat house. Despite the morning’s pouring rain, the tranquil ambiance of our indoor space allowed for a wonderfully restorative and energizing yoga class, setting a profoundly positive tone for the busy and inspiring day ahead. It was a perfect reminder that even unexpected weather couldn’t dampen the spirit of connection, wellness, and mindful living that permeated the retreat.
Breakfast was generously sponsored by Grocers List, an ingenious software solution designed to streamline Instagram DM automation for content creators. This platform simplifies the process of sending recipe links or other resources directly to your followers’ inboxes simply by having them comment on a specific post. The efficiency, user-friendliness, and sheer genius of Grocers List immediately captured my attention as a vital tool for blogger-reader engagement. Upon returning to Dallas, I wasted no time scheduling a detailed call with Ben from Grocers List, and I’m now a delighted and active user. It addresses a significant pain point for me as a blogger, making content distribution and reader interaction exponentially easier and more effective than any alternative I’ve tried. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any content creator looking to optimize their workflow and enhance their social media strategy.
Following our nourishing breakfast and an introduction to an invaluable new tool, we ventured out to the serene beach for an incredibly insightful “quick-fire” session focused on current blogging challenges. This unique, dynamic format allowed each blogger to present a specific struggle they were facing – perhaps an SEO conundrum, a content creation block, or a monetization hurdle – inviting all others to contribute their collective wisdom, practical solutions, and personal experiences. I left each of these sessions with an extensive list of innovative ideas and actionable solutions, truly feeling empowered and inspired by the shared knowledge. Even a few curious ducks, seemingly eager to join our circle, added a charming, memorable touch to the discussions, proving that inspiration can come from anywhere, even unexpected feathered friends!

Lunch featured Minute Rice, a sponsorship that resonated perfectly with my personal cooking habits and the needs of a busy lifestyle. As those who follow me on Instagram know, versatile and quick rice bowls are a constant in my lunch routine, and that’s precisely what we enjoyed with Minute Rice! While I often prepare rice from scratch, the undeniable convenience of Minute Rice – ready in just 60 seconds – is an absolute game-changer for busy schedules and quick meal prep. Their BPA-free containers mean you can simply pop them in the microwave and serve a delicious, fluffy base for your meal however you like. I was thoroughly impressed by both the quality of the meal and the remarkable ease it offered, making it an ideal solution for quick, nutritious, and adaptable meals, perfect for any food blogger on the go.

After a much-needed period of free time to relax and refresh, allowing us to absorb the day’s insights, we prepared for an exciting evening of happy hour and an extraordinary dinner experience. Our evening began at The Social Club on Collins Avenue in Miami, a chic and lively spot where I savored a wonderfully crafted mocktail. The vibrant atmosphere, engaging conversations, and stylish setting provided a delightful prelude for the culinary journey ahead, perfectly capturing the essence of Miami’s dynamic social scene.
From there, we took a pleasant stroll to Sérêvène, an exquisite dining establishment where we were graciously hosted by the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. This proved to be one of the most memorable and exceptional meals of my entire life. The dinner was an elaborate nine-course tasting menu, and I was deeply impressed by the chef’s remarkable ability to accommodate my specific allergies and intolerances (particularly gluten and nightshades) with such grace, creativity, and thoughtful precision. Every dish was not only safe for me to enjoy but also incredibly flavorful, artfully presented, and harmoniously composed. My absolute favorite was a delicate beet noodle dish, beautifully adorned with fresh fruit and aromatic herbs – its subtlety was its strength, achieving absolute perfection on the palate. This meal profoundly underscored the potential for fine dining to be both inclusive and utterly extraordinary, proving that dietary restrictions need not compromise gourmet experiences.

Day Three Recap: Poolside Relaxation and Grilling Innovation
Day three commenced with yet another exquisite breakfast meticulously prepared by Chef Trimell. This morning’s highlight was his ingenious “cloud eggs,” a whimsical and delicious creation made from whipped egg whites baked to airy perfection, forming a delicate cloud, and then crowned with a vibrant, perfectly cooked egg yolk. Seriously, how utterly charming, visually appealing, and fun is this dish? It was not just a meal but an artistic culinary experience that started our final full day with delight and a touch of culinary magic, showcasing Chef Trimell’s creativity.
Following our enchanting breakfast, the remainder of the day was spent in blissful relaxation by the poolside, perfectly balancing leisure with productive engagement. We continued our popular quick-fire Q&A sessions, further delving into advanced blogging insights, strategies, and challenges that only experienced professionals could truly understand. A lively game of Jenga also served as a fun, interactive medium for answering even more questions and exchanging invaluable personal tips about navigating the dynamic and ever-evolving world of food blogging. Amidst all the learning and laughter, I also seized the opportunity to capture some adorable and memorable photos, documenting the joyful spirit of our time by the pool and the genuine connections being forged.

The evening culminated with a spectacular dinner experience hosted by Current, a brand that honestly left me absolutely blown away with its innovative approach to outdoor cooking. I must admit, traditional grills, with their messy charcoal or propane tanks and the sheer amount of smoke, have always intimidated me a little. Perhaps it’s living in Texas, where the oppressive heat makes the thought of all the extra work involved with conventional grilling less than appealing. However, Current introduced me to their fully electric grill, and it was a revelation! The incredible ease of setup, the simplicity of cleaning, and the sheer joy of cooking with it was simply unparalleled. I had the fantastic opportunity to test it out firsthand, grilling fresh romaine and watermelon, and I can unequivocally say that I thoroughly prefer using this innovative electric grill over any traditional gas or charcoal option. It makes outdoor cooking enjoyable, accessible, and remarkably clean, even for those of us who typically shy away from grilling.

We concluded the night with another delicious dinner, followed by the timeless joy of s’mores by the crackling fire, sharing stories and laughter under the Miami sky. As I drifted off to sleep, my heart was full, and my mind was buzzing with an abundance of fresh ideas, innovative strategies, and renewed energy to bring home. All these insights are invaluable, aimed at making Unbound Wellness even more impactful, inspiring, and enriching for my incredible community of readers and fellow food enthusiasts!
My Core Learnings: Key Takeaways from the Fresh Air Retreat
- Embracing Culinary Exploration Beyond the Home Kitchen: One of the most significant personal revelations from this retreat was the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone when it comes to dining out. As a blogger focused on food intolerances, particularly gluten and nightshades, eating out can often feel like a minefield. I typically cook everything from scratch at home to ensure safety and enjoyment. However, during this retreat, I made a conscious effort to trust my incredible hosts and the meticulously chosen restaurants to accommodate my needs. And wow, was I pleasantly surprised! I was able to enjoy every single meal out without issue and returned home feeling fantastic. This transformative experience has profoundly inspired me to explore dining out more often, proving that with careful planning and clear communication, it’s entirely possible to enjoy diverse and delightful culinary experiences even with significant dietary restrictions. This insight will undoubtedly influence future content on Unbound Wellness, offering practical tips and confidence-boosting guides for dining out successfully.
- Transforming Workflow with Grocers List Integration: Discovering and seamlessly integrating Grocers List into my blogging toolkit has been an absolute game-changer, addressing a critical need I didn’t even realize existed so effectively. I cannot adequately express how much time, effort, and daily frustration this ingenious platform has already saved me. It automatically directs my engaged Instagram audience directly to my recipes and other valuable content on my website, solving a major bottleneck in my social media strategy and significantly improving user experience. Compared to previous, often clunky and less intuitive alternatives, Grocers List is incredibly user-friendly, efficient, and reliable, profoundly enhancing my ability to connect with readers and drive valuable traffic. It’s an essential tool every food blogger serious about optimizing their social media presence and streamlining their workflow should consider.
- The Unparalleled Power of Genuine Connection: In an increasingly digital and often isolating world, the Fresh Air Retreat powerfully underscored that genuine connection truly is everything. This extends to every facet of my professional life: connection with fellow bloggers, who instantly understand the unique nuances, challenges, and joys of this industry; connection with the innovative brands I am privileged to collaborate with, fostering meaningful partnerships; and, perhaps most importantly, connection with all of you, my amazing readers, who form the vibrant and supportive heart of the Unbound Wellness community. It’s incredibly easy to become siloed and isolated when working predominantly online. Prioritizing real, human connection, whether through enriching in-person events like this retreat or through dedicated and authentic online engagement, is absolutely vital for fostering personal growth, gaining fresh perspectives, nurturing a supportive professional network, and avoiding burnout. The synergistic energy, shared ideas, and emotional support derived from these connections are simply invaluable.
